SPARTAN STRIDERS REVIEW

At the East Coast Conference Cross Country Championship, held at Van Cortlandt Park, NY the Spartans came in 5thoverall out of the ten schools that were represented. They just missed the fourth spot by 1 point, in spite of bettering Dowling College's overall total 5 man time by 54 seconds.
Once again, leading the team was junior Elmer Eckert, who came
in 16th place with a time of 28:32, just 22 seconds off his personal best
for the 8K course. Elmer went out hard in the first mile, where he lead for a brief moment before settling into his race pace.
Elmer just missed the All ECC Team by 2 places.
Following Elmer into the chute in 22nd place with a time of 29:17
was junior Rafael Ortiz. Rafael picked up the slack for junior Andrew
Gangemi, who was nursing a thigh injury. Rafael ran a solid race as he
continued to pick runners off through out the course. Captain Gangemi
finished 3rd man for the team inspite of his injured leg which effected his
down hill running. He completed the course in 29:35 and placed 23rd overall.
Sophomore Vinny Modeferri continued his improvement by placing 24th
and running 29:42 for the hilly 8K race. Vinny had the biggest PR by
slicing off 1 minute and 24 seconds since his last race at VCP.
Running his first 8K at Van Cortlandt Park and rounding out the top 5 was freshman Christian Mendez who ran 30:59 and finished in 32nd position.
Coming in sixth position for the Spartans and finishing 37th overall
was freshman Matt Tucker who ran 32:06 and took 6 seconds off his
previous best for the VCP course.
Sophomore Lee Buelta. crossed the finish line in 32:41, and 42th place
overall. Lee removed 1 minute and 15 seconds from his personal best
time on VCP 8K course. Freshman Dan Nilsen, closed out the team
by placing 60th overall with a time of 39:18
The Lady Spartans also ran against 10 other schools.
While not winning the race, they did finish 8thoverall.
And two of the five ladies that toed the starting line broke their
own personal record for the tough Van Cortlandt Park 5K race.
For the second time this season, freshmanSade Mosher lead the STAC Women by placing 43rd overall with a time of 25:15. Sade chopped off 1 minute and one second on her previous time for the VCP 5K course.
Senior Lisa Urnaitis finished second for the Lady Spartans by placing 44th overall as she ran a 25:34 for her first attempt on the fabled trails of VCP.
SeniorSamara Vega saved one of her best performances for the conference meet as she chopped off 1 minutes and six seconds off her former 5K time for VCP. Samara came home in 25:40 and placed 47th overall.
SophomoreAshley Toscano, while still nursing an I.T. injury, once again ran a strategic race and finished in 27:01 good enough for 53rd place overall.
Tri-captain, Amanda Szorentini rounded out the top five by
placing 58th overall, in a time of 29:43.
Next up for the team is the NCAA Division II Regional Championship
held back on the fabled trials of Van Cortland Park on November 3rd.
