Women's Soccer Tops Mercy, 2 - 1

A late second half goal by freshman midfielder Samantha Lopez (Cortland Manor, NY) gave visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College a 2-1 decision over Mercy College in East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Saturday.  The Mavericks are 0-1 overall and 0-1 in ECC action, while the Spartans improved to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in the league.

After a scoreless first frame, St. Thomas Aquinas broke through in the 58th minute. Following a broken corner kick, junior forward Stacy Samora (Sloatsburg, NY) converted a feed from sophomore midfielder Julieanne Farewell (Pomona, NY) to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

Lopez tallied what would be the game-winner in the 81st minute when she converted a rebound of a Farewell header.

St. Thomas Aquinas sophomore goalkeeper Jeannette Gibson (Haverstraw, NY) made six saves.
