Lady Spartans Earn 1st Victory of 2008-09 Season
The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team beat visiting Post University 54-48. The Spartans were led by junior Colleen Vogel who scored thirteen points going 6-6 from the free throw line. Freshman Briana Sloper notched eleven points and was one rebound shy of her first double double collecting nine boards. Junior Whitney Dugan went 4-6 from the field marking her first appearance of the season.
The Lady Spartans took an early lead off a layup by Dugan and went back and forth with the visitors in the opening minutes of play. Post took the lead thirteen minutes in and was up by as many as five throughout the first half. The Lady Eagles went into the locker room up by two. Freshman Kim Vareles lead the Lady Spartans with six points in the first half.
STAC regained the lead at 15:34 off a free throw by Vogel but continued to exchange baskets with Post over the next few minutes. Kaitlin Page scored a layup to take a 37-35 lead with 9:32 remaining, but Stephanie Goss of Post retaliated with a layup of her own to tie the score for the final time. Goss lead the Lady Eagles with fifteen points.
With eight minutes remaining, Dugan's layup gave the Lady Spartans the final lead for the game which Post could not overcome. Sloper who gave the Lady Spartans a boost off the bench capitalized on clutch free throws over the final minutes of the game.
Junior captain Kaitlin Page dished out seven assists while pulling down seven rebounds as the Lady Spartans won the battle of the boards 40-36.
The Lady Spartans will return to action on Tuesday as they face Chestnut Hill College of PA. Gametime is slated for 5:30.
