Molloy Edges Lady Spartans, 83-72
The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team dropped a hard fought contest against regionally ranked Molloy College. Briana Sloper had twenty points and nine rebounds shooting 8-11 from the field. Theresa Dowling added twelve points including a key three pointer which extended STAC's lead to six with 8:16 remaining in the game.
Sloper's layup with five minutes to go kept STAC ahead three, 69-66, however the Lady Spartans failed to execute in their next four possessions turning the ball over. Molloy finished the game off shooting 9-12 from the foul line to secure the win on their home court.
Sylvia Davis added eleven points and six assists while Colleen Vogel notched ten points and four assists. Both teams fought hard as the game saw six lead changes and the scored tied ten times. STAC took their largest lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half off a jumper by Dowling putting them ahead, 28-21. Freshmen Natalie Catavero made a layup at the buzzer to give STAC a four point advantage at the half. Catavero finished with eight points after hitting back to back three pointers giving STAC a 21-15 lead earlier in the game.
The Lady Spartans did a good job on the boards in the first half out rebounding Molloy 19-14, however the Lions dominated the glass in the second half including five offensive boards from last year's ECC player of the year, Kymira Woodbury. Woodbury finished with a game high twenty-three points and fifteen rebounds. Clarissa Jones added seventeen points and Lisa Abitante added fifteen points and five assists for the Lions.
STAC will have a quick turn around as they travel to Dowling College on Saturday for a 1:00 game.
