Lady Spartans Explode Past Concordia, 82-59
Senior Claire Wilson Records a Double-Double and Provides STAC with Spark off the Bench
The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team got off to a strong start in yesterday's 82-59 win over Concordia. STAC was led by Colleen Vogel's twenty-six points and six rebounds. Vogel shot 4-9 from behind the arc as the Lady Spartans connected on a season high twelve three pointers. Senior Claire Wilson added twelve points and ten rebounds for STAC as well as a team high three steals. Wilson is within the top five for STAC's all time leaders* in steals with 120 for her career.
STAC got off to a quick start in the opening minute of play with back to back layups by Vogel and freshman Briana Sloper. Kim Vareles hit a jumper at 16:42 to put STAC ahead 8-6 and the Lady Spartans never looked back. STAC went on a 15-2 run over the next four minutes as Sylvia Davis added four points and an assist. Davis finished with thirteen points, five assists and five rebounds. Vogel led all scorers at the half with seventeen points shooting 6-10 from the field as STAC took a 53-35 lead into halftime.
Sophomore Theresa Dowling contributed eleven points and four assists while Sloper rounded out the double figure scorers with ten points and ten boards. The Lady Spartans dominated the glass with a 46-35 advantage over the Clippers. Brittany Binnie led Concordia with sixteen points and three steals. Kasey Grisanti added eleven points while Amanda Eggink tallied eleven rebounds.
"It was a great team effort, the crowd was into the game and having so many kids in the stands provided a fun atmosphere for everyone," commented Head Coach Kim Lusk. Saturday's game represented STAC's Take a Kid to the Game Day in which nearly sixty kids participated between the two games.
The Lady Spartans will travel to the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday for their next conference match-up. Tip off is set for 5:00 PM.
