Lady Spartans Blast Chestnut Hill
The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team beat visiting Chestnut Hill College 74-46. The Lady Spartans saw four players reach double figures; Briana Sloper (17), Colleen Vogel (16),Whitney Dugan (12) and Kim Vareles (10). Dugan, who is coming off her second career start, recorded her first double double pulling down eleven rebounds as well. Kaitlin Page dished out a career high eleven assists as the Lady Spartans recorded a season high twenty-seven assists for the game.
Junior guard Vogel scored a layup at 17:40 tying the game at seven before she hit a jumper to regain the lead for the Lady Spartans. The Griffins Maryann Glass scored a layup of her own tying the game for the final time of the night. Dugan scored a basket off an assist by Page putting the Lady Spartans up 11-9 with 13:57 to go and they never looked back.
Dugan, coming off a strong game on Saturday was 6-10 from the field scoring all of her points in the first half. "Whitney has been a key contributor in the last two games. She has added a new dimension to our offense," commented Lusk. Freshman Kim Vareles added six points on 3-3 shooting in the first half. Vareles, who finished with ten points, was strong on the glass pulling down six rebounds while distributing a career high seven assists. STAC took a ten point lead into the locker room (35-25).
Freshman forward Sloper grabbed five rebounds as she posted a personal best seventeen points in fourteen minutes. "Briana and Kim have come a long way in a short period of time. It's nice to see them play with the level of confidence and aggression we saw tonight."
The Griffins Davina Yacab scored fourteen points while pulling down ten boards for Chestnut Hill. The Lady Spartans received thirty points from their bench with every player scoring at least two points.
The Lady Spartans will be off until December 1st when they take on Northeast-10 opponent St. Michael's College. Their game will be the first of a double header with the men. The women will tip-off at 5:30 and the men will follow with a game against Philadelphia University at 7:30.
