Lady Spartans Pull Off 90-86 Road Win Against Bridgeport
The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team beat the University of Bridgeport, 90-86 in Wednesday evenings match-up. The Lady Spartans were led by Colleen Vogel's career high thirty-seven points including a season high five three pointers and 12-12 from the free throw line. STAC shot a season best 22-26 from the free throw line as well as forty seven percent from behind the arc (8-17).
Along with Vogel, freshmen Sylvia Davis and Briana Sloper each connected on two key free throws down the stretch to help keep it a two possession game. Davis who was 6-6 from the line added eleven points and seven rebounds for STAC. Sloper finished with twelve points and eight rebounds.
Theresa Dowling gave STAC a spark in the first half as she connected on a three to tie the game 11-11 with 12:31 to go. Dowling hit another three at the 5:27 mark to put STAC ahead 31-28. Claire Wilson rallied off six points in the final two minutes of the half to help give STAC a 47-44 advantage at the break. Wilson finished with fourteen points and five rebounds while Dowling added twelve points.
STAC opened the second half with a 15-4 run putting them ahead 62-48 with just over twelve minutes to play. Sloper rattled off three consecutive layups to give STAC a fifteen point lead with 8:14 remaining, however Bridgeport would not go away quietly as they put together a 14-0 run to pull within one (72-71). A jumper by Dowling and a layup by Vogel helped break the scoring drought for the Lady Spartans and keep them ahead in the final minutes of play. STAC finished the game off 14-14 from the free throw line to seal the win.
Bridgeport's Sidney Parson and Shannon Malone scored twenty and eighteen points respectively for the Purple Knights. Siobhan Moore added fifteen points while Danielle Bowles had twelve points and eight rebounds. STAC edged Bridgeport 41-38 on the boards.
The Lady Spartan's will play Saturday at 1:00 as they host NYIT in another East Coast Conference match-up.
