FRESHMEN TRACKSTERS STAR AT SETON HALL OPEN
Freshmen Ashley Toscano and Chris Muniz kept their record-setting streak alive while fellow first-year stars Jeanette Gibson and Brad McNiff registered noteworthy performances at the Seton Hall Open. The meet was held Sunday, December 10 at Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.
Toscano (Clarkstown South H.S., West Nyack, N.Y.) finished seventh overall in the 500-meter dash in 1 minute 26.16 seconds, her third school record in two weeks. She also matched her school record in the 200, clocking 28.03.
Muniz (Suffern H.S., Suffern, N.Y.) won his heat of the 500 meters and placed ninth overall in 1:08.80, shaving three-tenths of a second off his one-week-old school record. He later clocked 23.8 in the 200. Gibson (North Rockland H.S., Pearl River, N.Y.) heaved the 4-kilogram (8.8-pound) women’s shot 35 feet, 3 ¾ inches to take fifth place, STAC’s highest finish on the day. Fellow frosh Deb Lang (Red Bank Catholic, Sea Bright, N.J.) finished 10th in the shot put with a season’s best of 32 feet, ¾ inch.
McNiff (Pearl River H.S., Pearl River, N.Y.) came in sixth in the mile in 4:33.65, and returned later to win his heat of the 800 and place eighth overall in 2:03.36. Elsewhere for the Spartans, sophomore Andrew Gangemi (St. Peter’s Boys School, Staten Island, N.Y.) placed 11th in the mile (4:51.02) and 18th in the 800 (2:10.16); freshman Mike Valentine (Walter Panas H.S., Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) won his heat of the 500 in a personal-best 1:10.53 and also won his heat of the 200 (24.4); and freshman Renee Remmers (Northwestern Regional, New Hartford, Conn.) finished 14th in the 800-meter run in 2:49.74 and placed third in her heat of the 200 in 31.05.

Spartans’ next meet is January 6, when they travel to West
Point, N.Y., to compete in the Carleton Crowell Open.
