MUNIZ LEADS STAC AT CTC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Freshman Chris Muniz placed sixth in the 400-meter dash and ninth in the 200 meters to headline STAC’s showing at the Collegiate Track Conference championships, held April 22 at St. Francis de Sales University in Center Valley, Pa. The Spartans finished 17th in the team standings with 3 points.

Muniz established school outdoor records in both the 400 (50.58 seconds) and 200 (23.01), breaking marks he had set earlier this season.  Fellow freshman Jeanette Gibson finished 11th in the shot put with a best throw of 33 feet, 7 ¼ inches, and 14th in the discus with a heave of 96-10. Sophomore Andrew Spanos set a school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase en route to a 14th-place finish in 11:23.47.

Freshman Mike Valentine backed up Muniz by coming in 15th in the 400 in 51.90 and 17th in the 200 (first in his section) in 23.57. Sophomore Rafael Ortiz also won his section and placed 17th in the 800 meters in 2:04.50, his best time as a collegian. Fellow sophomore Elmer Eckert finished 17th in the 1,500 meters in 4:29.94.

Recording 22nd-place finishes were sophomore Anderson Munro in the 400 (56.66) and freshman Vin Modafferi in the 800 (2:07.34).

The Spartans travel to Philadelphia to compete in the 4x400-meter relay at the Penn Relays on April 27, then head to Palisades Park, N.J., for the Stevens Tech/NJIT Relay Carnival on April 29.
