GIBSON, MUNIZ STAR AT YALE INVITATIONAL

Freshmen Jeanette Gibson and Chris Muniz continued their outstanding seasons with record-setting performances at the Yale Track Classic, held Saturday, January 13 at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.

Gibson (North Rockland H.S./Pearl River, N.Y.) broke the school record in the women’s shot put for the second time this season. Her throw of 36 feet, 8 ¼ inches improved her own STAC record by 8 inches and placed her seventh in a high-quality field.

Muniz (Suffern H.S./Suffern, N.Y.) bettered the Spartans’ school record in the 400-meter dash by more than a second, clocking 50.87 seconds to win his section and finish 13th overall. The previous record was 51.9 set by Matt Winkeleer in 2005. Muniz now owns two school records outright (400 and 500 meters) and shares another (200 meters).

In other action for St. Thomas, Andrew Gangemi (St. Peter’s Boys School/Staten Island, N.Y.) won his section of the 800-meter run and finished 23rd overall in 2:08.25; Ashley Toscano (Clarkstown South H.S./West Nyack, N.Y.) took fourth in her section and 30th overall in the 400-meter dash in 64.64 seconds; Mike Valentine (Walter Panas H.S./Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) won his heat of the 400 and was 32nd overall in 53.62; Aidan Hearn (St. Peter’s Boys School/Staten Island, N.Y.) placed 10th in his section and 34th overall in the mile run in 5:00.90; and Renee Remmers (Northwest Regional/New Hartford, Conn.) came in third place in her section and 41st overall in the 400 in 68.61.

The Spartans’ season continues on Sunday, January 21 when they compete in the MAC Open at the Jersey City Armory in Jersey City, N.J.
