The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team lost to NYIT, 2-1 and 5-4 on Thursday afternoon. Rachael Hannawalt went 4-for-7 with 2 RBI and 1 hit. Megan Sweezy scoered a run for the Lady Spartans in each game.
In game one, Sweezy hit a lead off single and reached second off an error from the Bears. Jamie McCormick hit a sac fly to right field, scoring Sweezy and tying the game. The Bears rallied in the bottom of the 6th as Maura Cien-Mayer hit an RBI single to score Makenzie Jones and give NYIT a 2-1 lead. Maura Power had 5 strike outs in the loss.
In game two, the Bears used a 2-run 3rd inning to get on the scoreboard ahead of STAC. In the top of the 4th, Sharis Ruiz hit an RBI double to score Sweezy who led off with a single bringing STAC within one. In the next inning Rachael Hannawalt led off with a single and advanced to second on a ground out by Heather Clausen. Katie Meyers reached on an error and Hannawalt came around to score for STAC and tie the game.
The Bears did not go away quietly as they added three more runs at the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a 2-RBI double from Jacklyn Fagan. The Lady Spartans rallied in the 5th, as Hannawalt had a 2-RBI double scoring Ruiz and McCormick but it was not enough to close the gap. Sweezy had 1 strike out and gave up 5 runs in the loss.
STAC will return to action on Saturday as they host Mercy starting at 1:00 pm.
