Pace Tops STAC

The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team lost to Pace University in yesterday's double header.  The Lady Spartans fell, 8-7 in the first game and 16-13 in game two.  Sophomore Heather Clausen went 5-for-8 for the day with 5 RBI's  and 3 runs between both games.

Game 1:  STAC 7, Pace 8

The Lady Spartans got on the board early behind Clausen's two run homer in the top of the first.  Pace responded putting up four runs in the bottom of the inning and then two more in the second inning.  Both teams quieted down for the next couple of innings as the pitchers settled in a took control of the game.  STAC added three more runs in the fifth, behind RBI doubles from Shariz Ruiz and Clausen.  Angela Squilini also hit an RBI single to score Clausen and bring STAC within one, 6-5.  The Setters added a run in the bottom of the inning fighting to hang on to their lead.  STAC tied the game in the seventh as Ruiz hit another RBI double and Squilini drove in a run.  However, Samantha Polsen hit a single to right center with runners on first and third to score the go ahead run and give the Setters the win.   

Game 2: STAC 13, Pace 16

With the score at 2-1 in favor of the Setter the Lady Spartans exploded for an eight run fourth inning.  Alyssa Cataldo started the scoring with an RBI double scoring Michelle Sasso who lead off with a double.  Kayla Cornish hit a single to bring home Cataldo.  Samantha Welsh hit a double to center field, setting up Ruiz's 2-RBI single in the next at bat.  Calusen and Squillini each added RBI doubles before Sasso completed the inning with a 2 run homer to give STAC a 9-2 lead.  Pace answered the call with seven runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Kerri McLean's 3-run homer. 

With the scored tied at nine, STAC scored two more runs in the fifth but could not shake the Setters as they added three in the bottom of the inning.  The Spartans evened the score on a Cataldo double, scoring Amanda Forsythe.  However, a strong sixth inning for Pace put the Spartans behind, 16-12.  STAC added a run in the seventh but fell short, 16-13. 

STAC will play at Nyack on Thursday at 3:00 PM.
