Lady Spartans Fall Short in Extra Innings, 6-5
The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team lost to the University of Bridgeport, 6-5 in 11 innings. Sharis Ruiz was 3-for-6 with 2-RBI while Angela Squillini was 2-for-5 and added an RBI.
Bridgeport scored the first run of the game as they went ahead 1-0 in the second inning. STAC had a 4-run sixth inning as Joy Ferriello hit an RBI double to tie the game, 1-1. Ruiz added a 2-RBI single later in the inning as the Lady Spartans went ahead, 4-1.
Bridgeport came back with a 4-run inning of their own to regain the lead, 5-4. The Lady Spartans rallied to score a run in the seventh behind Squillini's RBI single scoring, Ruiz and forcing extra innings.
Bridgeport broke the scoring drought in the 11th inning behind a lead off double form Nicole Steiner. She advanced to third on a fielders choice and scored on a sac fly by, Tori Tenzyk. The Lady Spartans had opportunities to score in the bottom of the inning as Samantha Welsh hit a single with two outs. Ruiz hit a double in the next at bat and Michelle Sasso walked to load the bases, however, Squillini popped up to end the inning.
The second game of the day was suspended in a 2-2 tie due to darkness. The game will be finished on April 24th when the Lady Spartans travel to Bridgeport. The Lady Spartans will play at Queens on Thursday at 2:30 PM.
