Spartans Open Season With Thriller Win Against Stonehill
The St. Thomas Aquinas men's soccer team beat Stonehill College, 2-1 in double overtime this afternoon, to start their season. Daniel Davren headed in the game winning goal for the Spartans off a corner kick from Kurt Schuler. Adnrew Tartara recorded 5 saves for the Spartans.
It was a defensive battle for both team throughout the first 79 minutes of action, until a Skyhawk player headed a Davren throw in into their own goal, giving STAC a 1-0 lead. STAC continued it strong defense up to the final second of regulation when Stephen Hugel secured a loose ball and lofted a shot just over the hands of Spartan keeper Andrew Tartara. Hugels goal evened things a 1-up and force the overtime period.
Both teams continued to battle going scoreless for the first 10 minute session, forcing a second sudden death over time. Davren connected on Schuler's kick with just over a minute left to give the Spartans their first victory of the 2011 season.
Erci Schott had 3 saves for the Skyhawks. Senior Remington Lee added 2 shots on goal for STAC. The Spartans will return to action on Monday when they play at St. Anselm's College in New Hampshire. Gametime is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
