Spartans Upend Dowling, 62-61

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team used a late surge to push past Dowling 62-61. The Spartans were led by senior Akeem Comas with eighteen points and ten rebounds. Senior guard Chris Williams added twelve points while dishing out six assists.
Once again, STAC received an offensive contribution from eleven different players in a back and forth game that saw nine lead changes. Terrance Portis notched six points for the Spartans while, Ahmed Allen and Chad Williams each added five on 2-3 shooting.
Shaun Weaver stole the ball with seconds remaining in the first half and converted on the traditional three point play to bring STAC within one at halftime (31-32). Weaver had another key steal late in the game which lead to a Chad Williams jumper that put STAC up 48-43, giving them their largest lead in the second half.
Dowling fought hard to regain the lead off a three by David Seagers to put them up one. Seagers lead all scorers with twenty seven points on the night. STAC took their final lead of the night on a dunk by Comas with 3:36 remaining in the game. Both Williams and Pierre Gaspard hit key free throws late in the game to keep the Spartans in control. The senior duo of Willaims and Comas scored two layups in the final minutes of play to seal the victory for STAC.
The Spartans are 1-0 in ECC play as they travel to conference opponent CW Post on Saturday for a 3:30 tip-off.
