Spartans Hold Off Late Charge by Lightning
The St. Thomas Aquinas men's basketball team held on for a 70-66 victory against the Lightning of Goldey Beacom in the opening round of the Wilmington University Classic. The Spartans had four players score in double figures led by seniors Akeem Comas who notched seventeen points while grabbing five rebounds. Senior Terrance Portis added ten points in thirteen minutes on 4-5 shooting from the field.
Seniors Chris Williams and Pierre Gaspard chipped in thirteen and ten points respectively coming in off the bench. Gaspard shot a perfect 5-5 from the field while collecting a team high eight rebounds. The Spartans shot 47 percent from the field including 50 percent from behind the arc (5-10).
STAC was up by as much as fifteen in the second half before Goldey Beacom climbed back to get within three with less then a minute to play. The Spartans scored a quick layup to help cushion their lead and made late free throws to secure the win.
The Spartans will return to action Saturday as they face host Wilmington University. Tip-off is at 4:00 PM.
