Junior Pat Schwarze fired a team low 72 to set the tone for the Spartans as they posted a daily low round of 299 in the first round of the Northeast Regional Tournament at Back Creek Golf Course in Middletown, DE. St. Thomas is ahead of all 7 Northeast Region teams and ahead of the entire East Region after Day 1. Senior Jordan Perretz card ed a solid round of 75 after making a miraculous par save on 17 and a 20 foot birdie putt on 18. Freshman Chris Fitzpatrick started off slowly, shooting 6-over par on the front 9, but rebounded with a 1-under par back nine for a day 1 score of 76. Brian Viola rounded out the team scoring posting his own 76 with a front 9 of 39 and back 9 of 37.
The Spartans lead Bryant by 1 stroke, Pace by 4, Post by 8 and UMASS by 11 strokes. Coach Ferrara was pleased by his team's performance, but stressed that this is a 3-day tournament and they have their a lot of work ahead them. "This is an extremely competitive region and any team can post a great number on any day. We just want to remain in contention for the final day and leave ourselves in position to win."
