STAC Golf Starts Season In Puerto Rico
Spartans Set for Exciting Spring Season
The 2008 St. Thomas Men's Golf Team is set for an exciting spring season which starts in San Juan, Puerto Rico against some of the top Division I programs in the nation. The Spartans set off for the Caribbean on March 8th along with the likes of St. John's University, Virginia Commonwealth, Boston University, Virginia, Kentucky, Sacred Heart, Villanova, and other elite Division I schools. After completing the 54-hole tournament, the Spartans get right back to action at their 7th Annual Spring Invitational at Rum Pointe in Ocean City, MD. The linksters are led by Senior Captain Jordan Perretz who's 77.6 scoring average has him ranked in the top 30 among all Northeast players in Division II. Also leading the way is Junior Pat Schwarze who ranks 15th in the region with a solid scoring average of 76.0. Schwarze looks to defend his title in the team's third tournament of the year hosted by Dowling College in which he posted a 2-day score of 141 (1 under par). Freshman Nick Zolotas leads the Spartans to Syracuse for the LeMoyne College Spring Invitational, a venue where Zolotas medaled during the fall season posting a tournament low 143 (1 over par). It was rounds like this that lead to Zolotas having a team low scoring average of 75.23, good for 6th in the region and earning him top freshman honors.
Coach Stephen Ferrara has said "the team is working extremely hard everyday, waking up for 7am practices and hitting balls in the cold weather. The team's dedication will hopefully pay off with another selection to the NCAA Super Regionals and eventually the NCAA National Championships."
