Spartans Top Adelphi, 7-5 and Tie Game Two, 1-1

The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Adelphi 7-5, before tying game two 1-1.  In the opener, Nick Barbalato went 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored, while George Wargo finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored as well.  Andrew Ahn 3-for-4 with an RBI triple, run scored, and a stolen.

After falling behind 2-0 the Spartans cut the Panthers' lead in half when Barbalato drove in the Spartans' first run on an RBI bunt single. The Spartans took the lead in the next top half of the inning with two RBI singles to go up 3-2.  STAC would break the game open in the eighth inning, putting up three runs on one hit, highlighted by an RBI triple from Ahn, a sacrifice fly by Mike Apreda, and an Vincent Malzahn RBI bunt single.

Adelphi would cut the lead to 6-5 with a run in the bottom half of the inning but it wasn't enough as STAC added an insurance run in the ninth to hold on for the victory.  The Spartan run and bunt game was in top gear as they swiped 8 bases and had four bunt singles.  Chris Schoepe recorded a 6-out, 3 K save to secure the victory.

In game two Adelphi starting pitcher Scudero would hold the Spartans scoreless until the top of the seventh inning. Barbalato began the inning with an infield hit, followed by a single from Mike Walraven. With two outs and two strikes, freshman Derek Hirsch would drive in Frank Salerno to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman Eric Cooper would throw a scoreless 7th inning. After which the game was called due to darkness. 


For the Spartans, Barbalato went 1-for-3 and Hirch went 1-for-1 with the lone RBI. Sean Marsiglia struck out six, with no walks over six innings in the no-decision.

STAC will travel to Palm Beach, FL later this week, where they will play a nine game schedule.
