Spartans Fall to UMass Lowell, 4-1
The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team lost to UMass Lowell, 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J. George Wargo had an RBI double driving in the Spartans only run, scoring Mike Apreda who walked earlier in the inning.
Spartan Starting pitcher Joe Ferrara kept the Spartans in the game for the three innings, but ran into trouble in the 4th. Reliever Tom Enright inherited two runners and allowed one more on an error to load the bases with one out, but proceeded to get three consecutive outs and strand all three runners.
Riding that momentum switch, the Spartans mounted their own rally getting on the scoreboard 1-0. The Spartans would load the bases but could not score any more. The Spartans saw their 1-run lead vanish as Lowell answered in the bottom of the 5th with a 3-run homer. The Riverhawks added a solo shot in the 6th to stake themselves to a 4-1 lead which they held for the remainder of the game.
The Spartans will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Adelphi for a double header.
