Spartans Top Chestnut Hill

The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Chestnut Hill, 8-2 and 20-2 in Thursday's double header.  Kevin Ryan went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI in the opening game while Mike Apreda was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI in game two.

Apreda also went 2-for-5 with an RBI in the opening game for the Spartans.  Down 1-0, STAC put together a three run third inning.  The bats were quiet until Apreda's RBI single in the sixth to score Frank Salerno who lead off the inning with a walk.  In the next at bat Ryan homered scoring Apreda and giving STAC a 6-1 lead.  Salerno hit an RBI double in the next inning as the Spartans added runs in the seventh and eighth to secure to win.  Mike Aviles picked up the win and Matt Marotta had the save for STAC as they struck out five and six batters respectively. 

In the second game of the day, Chestnut Hill held a 2-0 lead until the Spartans took a 3-2 lead scoring three runs in the second highlighted by Andrew Ahn's triple.  STAC exploded in the fourth scoring nine to take a 12-2 lead.  Apreda had an RBI double while Peralta added a 2 RBI double.  Ahn, David Schwartz, Fred Moore and Dan McDermott each added RBI's in the inning.

STAC added three runs in the fifth as Apreda led off with a triple and scored off Mike Puka's single in the next at bat.  The Spartans added a run in the seventh and finished the game off strong with four more in the eighth highlighted by another Apreda triple.  Matt Matkovich earned the win for the Spartans giving up 4 hits, 2 runs and striking out 2.

The Spartans will play Nyack on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
