Spartans Outlast Mercy After Thirteen Innings

The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Mercy College 6-5 in extra innings.  The Spartans outlasted their cross-river rival in a 13-inning ECC marathon game tonight at Veterans Memorial Field. STAC took a 4-0 lead on a Mercy error, an RBI single from Joe Antenucci and a 2-RBI single from Dan McDermott. After Mercy scored three in the 4th and two in the 5th to take a 5-4 lead, the Spartan's Vin Malzahn knotted the score at 5-5. It would remain at 5-5 until the bottom of 13th when Matt Smith lifted a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to center to score Kevin Connors.

Malzahn led all hitters going 4-for-6 with two doubles, and the game-tying RBI. Dan McDermott had two RBIs, three walks, and scored a run. Pitchers Kevin Ryan, Scott Sadowski, Dave Schwartz, and Matt Marotta combined for seven scoreless innings in relief. Marotta earned the victory throwing a scoreless 12th and 13th.

The Spartans will face the University of Bridgeport on Thursday at the Vet.  Game time is slated for 3:00 PM.
