Spartans Take Two from Queens

The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat visiting Queens 11-1 and 5-3 in today's double header.  Sophomore Mike Aviles struck out nine batters, allowing only three hits in seven innings.  Sophomore Joe Antenucci was 3-for-5 with three RBI along with junior Vincent Malzahn who also had three RBI going 2-for-4.  In the second game of the day Malzahn picked up three more RBI starting with a bases loaded walk in the first inning.

The Spartans picked up two runs in the first as Malzahn reached on an error scoring Nick Barbalato who reached base with a single.  Dan McDermott hit a RBI single to score Matt Smith who was hit by a pitch.  STAC picked up a run in the third and two more in the fourth behind a Antenucci double which scored George Wargo.  Barbalato hit another single scoring Antenucci in the following at bat.  Queens scored their lone run in the top of the sixth before Kevin Connors answered with a 2 RBI single in the bottom of the inning.  STAC went on to score four more runs in the seventh as Antenucci hit his second double of the game.

The Spartans kept the scoring going as they picked up two runs in the first inning of the second game.   Malzahn drew a bases loaded walk to score Smith followed by a Joe Guistino RBI single.  STAC fell behind for the first time of the day in the third inning as Queens put three runs on the board.  The Spartans answered with a three run inning in the fourth to put the Knights away for good.  Barbalato finished 2-for-3 while Smith went 2-for-4.  Junior Brian LaMarr earned the win for STAC striking out seven in six innings.

The Spartans will be back in action on Monday as they travel to Mercy.
