Spartans Edge Post, 3-2
The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat C.W. Post 3-2 in ten innings. The Spartans were up 2-0 after seven innings before the Pioneers rallied back to tie the game and force the extra inning. Matt Smith hit a single to right field to lead off the tenth and advanced to second off a wild pitch putting him in scoring position. Smith advanced to third off a ground out by Vincent Malzahn and two batters latter scored the game winning run off a sacrifice bunt by Chris Zapata. Smith went 4-for-5 with an RBI.
Pitcher Matt Marotta picked up the win for the Spartans striking out two in the final innings of the game. Freshman Nick Barbalato put the Spartans on the board with an RBI single to left field in the second inning. Smith hit a double in the seventh scoring Joe Antenucci to put STAC ahead 2-0. Starting pitcher Tyler Savin pitched six scoreless innings giving up three hits and striking out one.
The Spartans will be back in action on Thursday as they face cross town rival Dominican College at the Vet. Game time is 3:00 PM.
