Spartans Blast Pioneers, 7-2
The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat CW Post 7-2 in yesterday's ECC matchup. Two time Rookie of the Week, Nick Barbalato kept his hot streak going hitting 3-for-5 including a triple in the five run second inning. Dan McDermott, Dan Stroud and Joe Guistino each added two hits for the Spartans.
The Spartans blasted open the game in the second inning as Vin Malzahn lead off with a single and Fernando Peralta was hit by a pitch putting runners on first and second. Guistino singled to load up the bases. Matt Marotta hit into a double play but was able to score Malzahn in the process. Joe Antenucci hit a RBI single to score the Spartans second run before the Barbalato triple that added the third run. In the next at bat, Matt Smith reached on an error by the third baseman scoring Barbalato. McDermott hit a RBI double putting STAC ahead 5-0. STAC added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth behind Peralta's RBI single and Marotta's sac fly to score Stroud and Malzahn.
CW Post scored two runs of their own in the eighth but it was not enough to catch the Spartans. Tyler Savin (pictured on left) picked up the win going seven scoreless innings, striking out three and scattering four hits. STAC is 11-2 in its last thirteen games and will look to continue it's hot streak with back to back games against Dominican College on Wednesday and Thursday. Both games will be played at 3:00 at the Vet.
