Smith Homerun Secures Split with Bridgeport
The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team split today's double header with the University of Bridgeport. STAC dropped the first game,8-3 before topping Bridgeport 5-2 with a strong seventh inning finish. In the second game of the day, Matt Smith hit a solo homerun to lead off the seventh, tying the game at two. Joe Antenucci's sacrifice fly to right field with bases loaded scored the game winning run. Freshman Nick Barbalato hit a triple, scoring two more runs and securing the win for the Spartans. The Bridgeport bats were held in check by starting pitcher Brian LaMarr who went the distance (7 innings), scattered six hits, had four Ks, issued one walk and yielded an earned run.
Earlier in the day the Spartan struggled with Bridgeport's pitching along with a six-run error filled second inning would lead to an 8-3 loss. The offense was led by Matt Smith who reached base three out of four times and added a stolen base. Vin Malzahn had a single, a stolen base, and scored two runs. Joe Antenucci had two walks, swiped a base and scored a run. Freshman pitcher Jared Randazzo hurled three innings of scoreless relief.
