Long Island, NY - St. Thomas Aquinas College collected a
season-high 16 hits and defeated Nyack
College Tuesday 7-4 in 12 innings at Baseball Heaven in Long
Island, New York. With the win STAC improves to 2-3 overall
while Nyack falls to 2-1 overall.
The Spartans rallied from a 4-1 deficit, scoring one run
in the 6th, one in the 7th, and eventually tieing the game in
the top of the 9th with an RBI single from freshman Dan
McDermott. Della Monica relieved Scott Sadowski (2 scoreless
innings) in the bottom of the 9th to preserve the tie and
force the game into extra innings. With the
score knotted at 4-4 in the 12th inning, Vin Malzahn hit
a 3-run home run to right center field to give STAC the 7-4
lead. It is Malzahn's second late inning home run
heroics in the young season. He also helped to erase a 5-3
deficit with a 2-out, 2-run homer in the top of 9th against PACE
this past Saturday (STAC would go on to lose that game in
the 11th). Nyack could not answer back in the bottom of the inning
as Della Monica struck out the side.
Malzahn went 3-5 on the night with a double and a homerun and 3
rbi's. Dan McDermott went 3-4 with a double and 2 rbi's while
Chris Zapata went 2-6, with 2 doubles and 3 runs scored.
Jonathan Della Monica pitched 3 2/3 innings of shutout,
no-hit ball to get the win. He retired 9 of the 11
batters he faced, striking out 6 and walking none. The Spartan
defense was tight in committing no errors in the extra inning
affair. Dan Marshall took the loss for Nyack.
