SPARTANS SWEEP MERCY, TAKE OVER 1st PLACE in EAST COAST CONFERENCE
Chris Zapata's bases-loaded RBI single in the bottom of the 9th gave STAC a 3-2 win and sole possession of first place in the East Coast Conference. The inning started with back-to-back singles from Vin Malzahn and Dan McDermott, which was followed by an intentional walk. Zapata then drove a 2-2 pitch over the right fielder's head for the game winner.
The Spartans pounded out 14 hits, but left 16 runners stranded. Kevin Connors led all STAC hitters going 4-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman, Dan McDermott went 3-for-3 with 2 walks and an RBI. John Mazzello went 3-for-5, with a double and a run scored. Joe Giustino was 2-for-4. Malzahn scored two runs including the game-winner.
Starter, Anthony Russo went 5.2 innings and scattered 3 hits. Freshman, Chris Schoepe finished the 6th and threw a scoreless 7th. Freshman, Mark Fochesato threw a scoreless 8th and 9th to pick up his 7th victory of the season.
The Spartans won their 25th game of the regular season, the most of any STAC team since 2003. They also took sole possession of first place in the East Coast Conference at 15-8. They return to action on Thursday night, 5:30pm at Rockland Community College as they try to complete a series sweep of Concordia.
