St. Thomas collected 24 hits and scored 22 runs while allowing only two earned runs in a couple ECC victories at C.W. Post today.

 

 

GAME 1 Boxscore

Freshman Mark Fochesato (Middletown, NY) hurled 6 innings, allowed 5 hits and struck out 4 in picking up the victory. He issued no walks and the Pioneers managed only one run (unearned) off the right-hander.

 

 

The Spartans scored 1 in the 3rd of a John Mazzello (Hyde Park, NY) RBI double, another in the 4th off a two-out RBI single from Joe Guistino (Old Bethpage, NY). STAC scored 5 runs in the 5th off four C.W. Post errors, singles from Freshmen Dan McDermott (Levittown, NY) & Kevin Ryan (Levittown, NY), a 2-RBI double from Fernando Peralta (Pine Bush, NY).

 

 

Pat Murray (Demarest, NJ) would add to the lead with a 2-RBI single in the 7th and Guistino would pick up his 3rd RBI of the game with a 2-RBI single in the 8th as the Spartans built an 11-1 lead.

 

 

GAME 2 Boxscore

McDermott and Ryan drove in a combined 7 runs and sophomore lefty, Brian LaMarr (Flushing, NY) hurled a complete game, issuing only one walk and allowing one earned run in leading STAC to victory in game 2.

 

 

With STAC up 1-0 in the 3rd, Ryan launched a 3-run homer to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead. After building a 5-0 lead the Spartan defense loosened up and allowed three unearned runs in the bottom of the 5th. But the offense erased the defensive miscues with 3 runs in the top of the 6th. Two of those runs would come from a McDermott 2-RBI single. Kevin Connors (W. Babylon, NY) drove in the other run with an RBI single.

 

 

The Spartans added three more in the 7th inning off an RBI double from Mazzello and 2-RBI double from McDermott. The lead built to 11-3. The Pioneers added 4 in the 7th, all unearned.

 

 

For the day McDermott went 6-for-9 with 2 doubles, 4 RBIs, 3 runs, and stole 2 bases. Mazzello went 4-for-8 with 2 doubles, 4 runs, and 2 RBIs. Guistino went 4-for-7, 3 RBIs, and 2 runs.

 

 

The Spartans improve to 12-10 overall and 4-2 in the East Coast Conference. They will take on C.W. Post tomorrow for the 3rd and final game of the series at Veterans Memorial Field in Orangeburg, NY. 1:00pm first pitch.
