MAZZELLO SELECTED TO ABCA/RAWLINGS ALL-REGION TEAM

Senior shortstop John Mazzello (Hyde Park, NY) was named to the 2008 ABCA/Rawlings All-NE Region second team after collecting a season record 73 hits and hitting .365 in the Spartans first season playing with wood bats. The ABCA/Rawlings All-NE Region Team is voted on by the coaches within the Northeast Region.
Mazzello was a 1st team all conference selection and was voted as ECC Player of the Week on April 14th. He was a key component in the Spartans record breaking season, as they finished as regular season champs for the first time since the school reclassified to NCAA Division II.
The senior short stop, posed a dual threat of power and speed to opposing pitchers, stealing 23 bases and scoring 41 runs while belting 19 doubles, 3 triples, 4 home runs, and driving in 37 runs.
In 200 at-bats, he struck out only 12 times, which ranked him 42nd in the nation.

Southern Connecticut's Derbacher Named Regional Player Of Year
Southern Connecticut's Fuller Tabbed As Regional Pitcher Of Year

Southern Connecticut University junior Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) has been named as the 2008
American Baseball Coaches of America/Rawlings Division II Northeast Region Player of the Year, while Southern Connecticut's sophomore Jim Fuller(Marlboro, Mass.) has been tabbed as the ABCA/Rawlings Division II Northeast Regional Pitcher of the Year. The announcement came today from Patrick Boen, Head Baseball Coach at Stonehill College and the Northeast Regional chair of the ABCA Division II All-America Committee. As winners of the regional awards, Derbacher and Fuller are both assured spots on the 2008 ABCA/Rawlings Division II All-America team, which will be announced later this month. Derbacher, the 2008 Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year, batted .408 with 84 hits, including 20 doubles, five triples, 28 stolen bases and 51 RBI for the 2008 NCAA Division II Northeast Regional participant Owls. Fuller, the 2008 Northeast-10 Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year, posted a 9-3 mark with a 1.39 earned run average. He tossed two complete games and two shutouts in 14 starts while allowing just 15 earned runs in 97 innings of work. Fuller also struck out 145 batters and opponents hit only .175 against him during the season.
