Diaz & Varricchio Homer Four Times, Spartans Swipe Two at Queens
Down 8-3 in the 5th innning of game one, Javier Diaz slammed a 2-run homer to close the lead to 8-5. After a leadoff walk in the 6th, T.J. Varricchio hit a 2-run homer to make it a 8-7. Queens mounted a rally in the 9th, putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs, but John Muller would come on to strike out three consecutive batters and stifle the rally. The Spartan 9th started with a Mike Triana walk, followed by John Muller's sacrifice bunt. With one out, Diaz hit his second 2-run homer of the game to give the Spartans a 9-8 victory.
In game two, freshman lefty Brian LaMarr pitched a complete game, striking out seven, scattering five hits, and allowing only two earned runs. Vincent Malzahn and Varricchio homered. Muller had two hits, a double, a game-winning RBI, run scored and a stolen base. Diaz had an RBI double.
John Mazzello hit safely in both games, extening his hitting streak to 20 games.
