Spartan News: April 5 - April 11 

Basbeall:
The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team went 3-3 for the week.  The Saprtans went 3-2 in the five game series against Dowling College.  STAC dropped a 3-1 non-conference game to Dominican.  In the Spartans first win over Dowling, Kevin Ryan went 3-for-4 with 1 run and 1 stolen base while Matt Matcovich went four innings on the mound to pick up the win.  Mark Fochesato earned the save in the 5-3 victory.  In the second meeting, Matt Smith scored on a squeeze play by Marotta in the eighth inning to give STAC the 3-2 lead.  Fochesato had the save for STAC as he struck out Dowlings final three batters in the ninth.  In game three, Brian LaMarr went seven scoreless innings giving up one hit and striking out 4 batters for the 1-0 win. Mike Apreda hit an RBI-single to score STAC's run.  The Spartans will play Nyack on Monday along with a five game series against the University of Bridgeport. 

Softball: 
The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team went 2-5 this week, picking up two wins over Chestnut Hill College.  STAC dropped a 6-5 game to Bridgeport in 11 innings behind Sharis Ruiz's 3-for-6 with 2-RBI and Angela Squillini's 2-for-5 with an RBI.  The second game against Bridgeport was cut short due to darkness and will be made up on April 24th.  STAC dropped two close games to Queens, 4-1 and 3-2 before struggling with Molloy College, 15-1 and 14-4.  In Sundays double header against Chestnut Hill, Angela Squillini went 2-for-6 with a run and 4 RBI's.  Freshmen Maura Power and Samantha Welsh picked up their second career wins for the Lady Spartans as they topped the Griffins, 6-2 and 6-1.  Welsh also had a career high 12 strike outs in the win.  The Lady Spartans will play double header against Dowling, Felician, NYIT and Dominican throughout the week.

Women's Lacrosse:
The St. Thomas Aquinas women's lacrosse team went 0-1 for the week.  The Lady Spartans lost to Philadelphia University, 16-5.  Freshman Johannah Mitchell along with sophomore Anne Buttafuoco each scored two goals while Lindsey Lawless had one.  Jen Kugler had 13 saves for STAC.  STAC will play at Dominican on Thursday before traveling to Queens for an ECC game. 
 
Men's Tennis:
The St. Thomas Aquinas men's tennis team went 1-2 this week.  Freshman Nicolas Jacques went 3-0 in singles for the week and 1-1 in his doubles matches.  Fellow freshman Kilian Wantzen went 2-1 in his singles matches for the week.  On Saturday, the St. Thomas Aquinas athletic department honored senior Mike Antolini in a pre-match ceremony for his four years of hard work and dedication to the Spartan tennis program.  The Spartans will play their last regular season match on Thursday when they travel to Post University. 

Golf:  The St. Thomas Aquinas Men's Golf team finished 3rd this past weekend at the 5th Annual Peter King Memorial tournament hosted by Dowling College. Head Coach Stephen Ferrara earned his 300th career head-to-head Division II victory in his 4 years at St. Thomas Aquinas.  Sean Campbell led the Spartans with a team low round of 75. Junior Chris Fitzpatrick posted a solid round of 76 and Sophomore Mike Gunderson shot a round of 77. Rounding out the team scoring was freshman Nick Delango who posted a round of 80.

Track & Field: The St. Thomas Aquinas track & field team did not compete this past weekend.
