(Sparkill, NY) – Ground has officially been broken on the next step in the future of St. Thomas Aquinas College athletics. Spartan Fields is tentatively scheduled for a spring 2013 opening. Located on the site of the current field a short walk from the STAC campus gates, the new venue will incorporate a turf field that will be the home of the Spartans’ softball, women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s soccer teams.

“I am very excited about the creation of ‘Spartan Fields,’” noted college President Dr. Margaret Fitzpatrick. “These fields will support our sports program, showcase the competitiveness of our student-athletes and be a sign of the College's growth toward 2020.”

Among the amenities to be added to the new facility is an on-site locker room facility as well as a parking area. The potential benefits are not lost on Barbara Vano, who is not only the department’s associate director of athletics, but also the long-tenured softball coach. "The new athletic facility is a great addition to the growth of the college and the athletic department,” Vano commented. “This field will allow our soccer, lacrosse and softball teams to have a state of the art athletic facility and a true home field advantage. It will also allow the college community to support our student-athletes a little closer to campus. This is a great day for St. Thomas Aquinas College."

While teams will have to play at different facilities during the fall season, the future looks bright as the St. Thomas Aquinas athletic department moves forward into the 2013 season and beyond.
