STAC Drops Hard-Fought Men's Volleyball Match with No. 9 Lewis

University Park, Pa. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Volleyball team wrapped up its two-day, two-match Keystone State trip on Friday evening, falling 3-0 to No. 9 ranked Lewis University at the Rec Center on the Penn State University Campus.

STAC drops to 1-4 on the young season, while Lewis remains undefeated at 4-0.

Despite dropping a pair of matches to Penn State and Lewis, the Spartans continued to show nationally ranked teams that they would not be an easy out. Against the Flyers, the maroon and gold were able to shake off a tough first set to settle in and battle in sets two and three.

How it Happened

  • As a team, Lewis recorded 34 kills compared to St. Thomas Aquinas' 24. The Flyers also had 14 blocks and 31 assists, while the Spartans tallied no blocks and 24 assists.
  • Lewis outhit STAC by a .410 to .033 margin for the match.
  • Jakob Schwarz paced the Spartans offense with a match-high ten kills. He also registered five kills.
  • Marcus Franck tallied a team-high 20 serve assists (6.67 assists/set). Franck also accumulated a kill and three digs for the maroon and gold.
  • Luis Grath picked up four kills on Friday evening.
  • Santiago Valenca racked up three kills against the Flyers.
  • Kyran Versteegen contributed two kills, a serve assist and three digs.
  • David Weiss accumulated two kills in the match.
  • Bas van Deventer put together a one kill, two serve assist and three dig effort for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas has now faced off with the No. 3 (Pepperdine), No. 5 (USC), No. 9 (Lewis) and No. 13 (Penn State) AVCA nationally ranked teams.
