Deptford, N.J. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Bowling team traveled to the Garden State for two days of action on the lanes at the Chestnut Hill College Griffin Baker Classic.
The tournament featured a scratch event format, and on Saturday, the Spartans kicked things off by competing in five baker games with total pin fall deciding the outcome of each contest. Sunday, the maroon and gold did battle in two sets of baker games, as again total pin fall decided the victor of each competition. A championship round then followed to determine the overall winner of the tournament with two best of seven series baker matches.
Despite fighting through illness and lineup changes, STAC started off day one with high energy. Grace Ntango (Brooklyn, N.Y.) celebrated her 21st birthday with the team by delivering some much needed spares down the lanes. Her energy was contagious, and it showed throughout the day amongst her and her teammates.
Sunday brought intense competition as the Spartans faced off against Wilmington University (Del.) and Holy Family in a best of 7 showdown. STAC had its early struggles in missing corner pins, splits and spares forcing them to play catch up. However, in game three versus the Wildcats Ashley Sena (Garnerville, N.Y), the team's anchor, delivered a clutch spare to lock in the first win. Sena then did it again against the Tigers in a clutch tenth frame to seal the game for the Spartans, giving them their second victory of the day.
