Sparkill, N.Y. - Despite a late fourth quarter surge, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Lacrosse team dropped a 10-6 decision to No. 13 USILA Division II nationally ranked Molloy University on Saturday at Spartan Field.
STAC falls to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in ECC play, while Molloy improves to 8-2 and 3-0.
Cam Wallace led the Spartans' offense with four goals on the afternoon, while Max Benoit and Jeremy Poggi each tallied a goal and added an assist. Hayden Gaudette (L, 2-7) got the start in between the pipes for the maroon and gold and stopped 20 of 30 shots fired in his direction.
Meanwhile, Molloy was led by Brian Green, who tallied four goals, while Sean Peyon netted a pair of goals. Tommy Corcoron (1 goal, 1 assist), Thomas Kofod (1 goal), Noah Hammon (1 goal) and Zach Kroog (1 goal) added to the totals on the scoreboard for the Lions. Goalie John Basile (W, 8-2) made five stops on 11 shots to earn the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
St. Thomas Aquinas struck first in the opening quarter, as Cam Wallace found the net twice, including the game's first goal off a feed from Wilson Ingalls. Molloy answered with an equalizer from Brian Green, but Wallace responded quickly to restore the Spartans' 2–1 edge heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter belonged to Molloy. Brian Green led the charge, scoring twice—including a man-up goal—to give the Lions their first lead of the game at 3–2 heading into halftime.
Molloy took full control in the third quarter with a dominant stretch. Goals from Zach Kroog and Tommy Corcoron quickly extended the lead, and although Jeremy Poggi briefly halted the run for St. Thomas Aquinas, the Lions answered with back-to-back tallies from Noah Hammon and Sean Payton to build a 7–3 advantage.
The Lions continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter. Brian Green completed a standout performance with another goal, while Sean Payton and Thomas Kofod added unassisted scores to push the lead to 10–3. St. Thomas Aquinas showed late fight with three unanswered goals—two more from Cam Wallace and one from Max Benoit—but the rally came too late as Molloy secured the victory.
