Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Lacrosse team made the short trip across the Hudson River to Westchester County for a Saturday afternoon East Coast Conference matchup with Mercy University. A fifteen-goal first half outburst sent the Mavericks to an eventual 22-5 victory over the Spartans.
STAC falls to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in ECC play, while Mercy improves to 7-5 and 3-2.
Christian Rodriguez led the Spartans' offense with two goals and an assist on the afternoon, while teammates Lou Takacs, Cam Wallace and Jesse Kovaleski also talled a goal apiece for the maroon and gold. Goalie Hayden Gaudette (L, 4-10) got the start between the pipes for STAC and stopped 6 of 21 shots faced in the first half action, with Jaden Heltzel coming on in relief for the final 30 minutes and stopping 5 of 12 shots fired his way.
Meanwhile, Mercy was led by Jack Agres (3 assists) and Dillon Osorio, who both tallied hat tricks. Cole Hunsberger (4 assists), Connor Abrahal (1 assist), Matthew Magyar (1 assist) and Benjamin Salamone each scored twice, with Jackson Wilkinson (2 assists), Collin Orsino (1 assist), Christopher Bergersen (1 assist), James Goodrich, Devon Duchnowski, Jake Norton, Christopher DeGiorgio, and Michael Mitrano adding to the totals on the scoresheet with a goal apiece for the Mavericks. Goalie Cameron Dorfman (W, 7-4) stopped 4 of 5 shots fired his way in first half action. Peter Murphy came on in relief for the second half and turned aside 12 of 16 shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Mercy wasted no time setting the tone, opening the scoring when Jack Agres finished a feed from Christopher Bergersen for a 1–0 lead. Just over two minutes later, Agres returned the favor, assisting on James Goodrich's goal to make it 2–0. St. Thomas Aquinas answered shortly after, as Christian Rodriguez converted off an assist from Austin Palen to cut the deficit to 2–1.
Mercy responded immediately. Cole Hunsberger scored unassisted, followed by Bergersen finishing a pass from Agres to extend the lead to 4–1. Moments later, Michael Mitrano struck unassisted, and Mercy kept rolling when Matthew Magyar scored off Liam Neimeth, closing the first quarter with a 6–1 advantage.
The second quarter opened with more of the same. Hunsberger netted another unassisted goal, and Dillon Osorio followed off a feed from Magyar to make it 8–1. Devon Duchnowski added another with help from Dean Kott, and Connor Abrahall scored on an assist from Agres, pushing the lead to 10–1.
Mercy's offense surged late in the half. Agres scored off Hunsberger, Jake Norton added one—also assisted by Hunsberger—and Magyar struck again, marking Hunsberger's third assist in that stretch. Agres capped his big half with another goal, again set up by Hunsberger, and Benjamin Salamone closed the half scoring with a goal from Colin Orsino, giving Mercy a commanding 15–1 halftime lead.
Out of the break, Connor Abrahall scored unassisted, followed by Dillon Osorio's second goal off Jackson Wilkinson to make it 17–1. St. Thomas Aquinas showed life late in the quarter, as Cam Wallace scored off Rodriguez, and Lou Takacs added an unassisted goal to bring the score to 17–3.
In the fourth, St. Thomas Aquinas continued to chip away, with Jesse Kovaleski scoring unassisted. Mercy answered when Jackson Wilkinson finished a pass from Abrahall, and then extended the lead further as Salamone scored off Wilkinson. Colin Orsino added another, assisted by Brody Kesselring, making it 20–4.
Rodriguez scored his second of the game unassisted for St. Thomas Aquinas, but Mercy closed things out with two more goals. Dillon Osorio completed his hat trick off Salamone, and Christopher DeGiorgio finished the scoring unassisted, sealing a dominant 22–5 Mercy victory.
