The St. Thomas Aquinas Cross Country teams took first place in both the men's and women's races at the NYIT Invitational. The race was a preview for the East Coast Conference Championship that will be held at the same site in late October. In the men's race, which measured in at 7.7K, sophomore Robert Guidicipietro finished 2nd, covering the course in 24:55. Senior Vincent Vazquez was the second Spartan finisher in 25:23. His 5th place finish was on pace to set an 8K personal best. Freshman Nicholas Martello continued to show his potential as he finished in 6th place in 25:52. Sophomore Kyle Kondracki was next for the Spartans in 27:24, while senior Christian Diaz was the final scorer at 27:41. Freshman Matthew Tina showed great improvement after his first race clocking in at 27:51.
After not competing in the 2016 cross country season, Kristen Borriello returned to the course as the first Spartan finisher. Borriello's 19:30 put her in 2nd place overall. Sophomore Aida Torpey continued to drop her times as she covered the 5K course in 19:42. Classmate Rebecca MacLeod continued to show improvement with a collegiate best of 20:03. In 6th place, freshman Abagaile Kimbrell finished at 20:22, which was nearly 30 seconds faster than her debut race. Senior Kara Santa Teresa was next for the Spartans, clocking a time of 21:10. Freshman Mary Dristle and sophomore Grace Carter finished in 22:48 and 23:27 respectively.
The Spartans will host the Spartan Alumni Run on Saturday at Tallman Mountain State Park at 10:00 AM. They will return to collegiate racing at the Paul Short Invitational on September 29th.
