The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Lacrosse team defeated ECC newcomer D'Youville College, 20-7 on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field in Sparkill, NY.
Leading the STAC offense was Danielle Cajou and Leanna Iobbi with five goals apiece and Micaela Ross with four goals. Arielle Rodriguez and Jennifer Farrell (2 goals each), Olivia Cerbo and McKenzie Schlechtweg (1 goal each), also contributed to the Spartan scoring. Goalie Laura Delorenzo (W, 4-2) got the start in net for STAC and stopped 6 of 13 shots faced.
STAC raced out to an early 6-0 advantage, as Jennifer Farrell (2), Leanna Iobbi (2), Arielle Rodriguez and Danielle Cajou would all tally goals in the first 20 minutes of the first half, before D' Youville would get themselves on the scoreboard with back-to-back goals by Bethany Wolcott and Riley Riedel to make it a 6-2 game for the Spartans. Cajou and Iobbi would then score their second and third goals of the game, respectively, to go along with a Micaela ross strike to close out the scoring for St. Thomas Aquinas and give the maroon and gold a 9-2 lead at the break.
Second half action saw Danielle Cajou pick up her third of the game only 1:07 into the second stanza to extend the STAC lead to 10-2. The visiting Saints would try to climb back into the contest with back-to-back-to-back tallies, as Bethany Wolcott (2) and Isabella Lucania would cut it to a 10-5 game. However, D'Youville's attempts at a comeback would be short lived, when Danielle Cajou would score her fourth of the game, along Leanna Iobbi netting her fourth and fifth of the contest and Micaela Ross's second of the day would quickly make it 14-5 lead for the Spartans. Marissa Markott would then score for the visitors from Buffalo to make it 14-6, before St. Thomas Aquinas would strike for five more goals, as Micaela Ross (2), Olivia Cerbo, McKenzie Schlechtweg and Danielle Cajou would all light the lamp to extend the lead to 19-6. Riley Riedel and Arielle Rodriguez would trade goals, with each picking up their second of the afternoon, to close out the scoring and give STAC the 20-7 victory.
St. Thomas Aquinas held a 36-17 shots advantage for the game.
STAC (4-2) will continue their three game homestand, facing Mercy College on Wednesday, April 28. Opening draw is set for 2pm at Spartan Field.
