66-53 Women's Hoops Defeat at Molloy Extends Spartans' Skid to Three

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team dropped its third straight contest on Wednesday evening, 66-53 to Molloy University at Bob Houlihan Gymnasium on Long Island.

STAC falls to 7-19 overall and 4-10 in ECC play, while Molloy moves to 11-19 and 9-4.

Jona Kabashi led the maroon and gold offense with a team-high 14 points. Meanwhile, Sophia Yearwood led all Lions players in scoring with 22 points of her own.

STAC shot 29.9 percent (20-67) from the field, while Molloy shot 35.4 percent (7-23) from the floor and 86.7 percent (13-15) from the foul line.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Seven Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
  • Toni Schuetze led the maroon and gold with four assists on the evening.
  • Jona Kabashi hit 5 of her 12 field goal attempts and 4-of-5 free throws. 
  • Molloy out-rebounded STAC by a 48-42 margin, with Delaney Finnegan grabbing a team-high seven boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up 13 steals, with the Lions turning the ball over on 23 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned one advantage in the team statistical categories over Molloy: Bench Points (21-11).
  • St. Thomas Aquinas had its largest lead of the game (six points) with just over three and a half minutes to play in the first quarter, 12-6, on a Delaney Finnegan jump shot.
  • The game featured three ties and two lead changes.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas trailed Molloy, 33-27 at the half and shot 27.2 percent (9-33) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-18) from beyond the arc and 83.3 percent (5-6) from the foul line.
  • Bailey Chapman led all Spartans' scorers with six first half points, while shooting 40.0 percent (2-for-5) from the floor and 66.7 percent (2-of-3) from long range.
  • STAC's best shooting quarter came in the final stanza, with the Spartans shooting 43.8 percent (7-16) from the field and 50.0 percent (2-4) from beyond the arc.
  • Despite winning the first and fourth quarters, the Spartans were outscored 52-22 in the second and third quarters.

MOLLOY NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Eight Lions logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Sophia Yearwood led the Lions with a game-high 22 points, while teammates Colleen McCullagh (13pts) and Sharmeela Ugbogbo (11 points) also scored in double figures.
  • Rosa Rizzitelli led Molloy with nine assists on the night.
  • Yearwood went 8-for-12 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the three-point line, as McCullagh went 6-for-14 from the field.
  • Sharmeela Ugbogbo grabbed a game-high 12 boards for the Lions.
  • Molloy picked up 14 steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 22 separate occasions.
  • The Lions earned advantages in four team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Points off Turnovers (17-16), Second Chance Points (14-9), Points in the Paint (28-22) and Fastbreak Points (8-0).
  • Molloy had its largest lead of the game (29 points) with just under nine minutes to play in the fourth quarter, 64-35, on a Colleen McCullagh layup.
  • Sophia Yearwood led all scorers at the half with 14 points for the Lions, while shooting 71.4 percent (5-for-7) from the floor, 100.0 percent (3-of-3) from beyond the arc and 100.0 percent (1-of-1) from the free-throw line.
  • Molloy's best shooting quarter came in the second stanza, with the Lions shooting 50.0 percent (8-16) from the field, 62.5 percent (5-8) from downtown and 80.0 percent (4-5) from the foul line.
