STAC Women's Hoops Falls to Staten Island, 59-50

Staten Island, N.Y. - A tough third quarter turned a 28-25 battle into a frustrating loss for St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball as the Spartans fell 59-50 at the College of Staten Island on Wednesday evening at the Sports and Recreation Center.

STAC slips to 4-13 overall and 2-4 in ECC play, while CSI moves to 7-10 and 3-3.

Toni Schuetze led the maroon and gold offense with a game-high 18 points, while Jona Kabashi (11 points) also scored in double digits. Meanwhile, Arielle Barnes led all Dolphins players in scoring with 13 points of her own.

STAC shot 34.5 percent (19-55) from the field, and 100.0 percent (8-8) from the foul line, while Staten Island shot 44.7 percent (21-47) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Six Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
  • Abby Jacoby led the maroon and gold with three assists on the evening.
  • Toni Schuetze hit 6 of her 14 field goal attempts and 4-of-4 from the foul line. Jona Kabashi went 3-for-8 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
  • Staten Island out-rebounded STAC by a 36-29 margin, with Bailey Chapman grabbing a game-high ten boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up eight steals, with the Dolphins turning the ball over on 19 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in four team statistical categories over Staten Island: Points off Turnovers (16-15), Second Chance Points (8-3), Points in the Paint (26-20) and Bench Points (20-13).
  • St. Thomas Aquinas had its largest lead of the game (seven points) with just under eight minutes to play in the second quarter, 19-12, on an Abby Jacoby layup.
  • The game featured three ties and eight lead changes.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas led Staten Island, 28-25 at the half and shot 44.4 percent (12-27) from the field, 42.9 percent (3-7) from beyond the arc and 100.0 percent (1-1) from the foul line.
  • Toni Schuetze led all scorers with 11 first half points for the Spartans, while shooting 50.0 percent from both the field (4-of-8) and three (2-of-4), and 100.0 percent (1-for-1) from the foul line.
  • Despite leading by three points after the first 20 minutes of action, the Spartans were outscored 34-22 the rest of the way.

STATEN ISLAND NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Seven Dolphins logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Arielle Barnes led the Dolphins with a team-high 13 points, while teammates Kyra Rose (12 points), Giuliana Dito (11 points), Shonyae Edmonds (10 points) and Racky Kane (10 points) also scored in double figures.
  • Barnes also led Staten Island with four assists on the night.
  • Barnes went 5-for-9 from the floor, 1-of-2 from long range and 2-of-3 from the free-throw line, as Rose went 4-for-8 from the field and 4-of-5 from the foul line.
  • Arielle Barnes also grabbed a team-high six boards for the Dolphins.
  • Staten Island picked up three steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 16 separate occasions.
  • The Dolphins earned one advantage in the team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Fastbreak Points (7-2).
  • Staten Island had its largest lead of the game (11 points) with just under nine minutes to play in the contest, 51-40, on a Giuliana Dito three-point jump shot.
  • Kyra Rose led all Dolphins' scorers at the half with ten points, while shooting 66.6 percent (4-for-6) from the floor and 66.7 percent (2-of-3) from the free-throw line.
  • Staten Island's best shooting quarter came in the third stanza, with the Dolphins shooting 61.5 percent (8-13) from the field and 50.0 percent (2-4) from long distance.
