Wilmington, Del. - Ariana Mirenda's walk off, inside-the-park home run gave Goldey-Beacom College a 3-2 win and a sweep of a doubleheader against visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference softball play. The Lightning also won the first game by the same score of 3-2.
The two victories pushed Goldey Beacom's record to 8-1 while STAC dropped to 0-6. Goldey-Beacom's Caitlyn Burch earned a save in the first game and the win with two innings of relief work in the second game.
STAC starting pitcher Madison Puppolo took a 2-0 shutout into the sixth inning before Goldey-Beacom's Rayna Pelchak's single to center field scored Alex Lowry. In the seventh inning, McKenna Frank reached safely on an error and Mirenda followed with her two-run homer to right field.
STAC's offense was led by freshman Gianna Longo, who drove in both STAC runs with singles. Teammate Eliana Raposo added a double and run scored.
In the first game, Goldey-Beacom posted two runs in the first inning on Autumn Simpson's triple and added an unearned run in the sixth inning to register the win. Olivia Leon and Adriana Coira drove in the STAC runs.
STAC will begin its eight-game Florida swing on Friday with games against Southwest Minnesota State University and Edinboro University.
