Queens, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Softball team clinched their fourth straight East Coast Conference Regular Season Championship with a doubleheader sweep of Queens College on Thursday afternoon at the QC Softball Field by the scores of 11-2 and 10-2.
STAC improves to 27-16 overall and 15-3 in ECC play, while Queens falls to 7-27 and 3-15.
As a result of their first place conference record and outright regular season title, the Spartans will host the upcoming ECC Softball Tournament May 1-3 at Spartan Field.
St. Thomas Aquinas kicked off game one with a run in each of the second and third innings, via RBI singles from both Elyse Marcano and Sofia Marella to make it 2-0. Olivia Leon's 2 RBI double and Marcano's run-scoring sacrifice fly in the sixth inning increased the maroon and gold lead to 5-0.
STAC blew the game wide open with a six-run seventh, highlighted by a Trinadey Santiago 2 RBI double and a three-run double courtesy of Nayah Diaz. Adriana Coira capped the Spartans' scoring at 11-0 when her sac-fly drove in a run. The Knights scored twice in the bottom of the stanza, but that would be all of the runs that the hosts could muster for an 11-2 final.
Starting Pitcher Sarah Clancy (W, 14-9) secured her fourteenth win of the season on the strength of seven solid innings in the circle, as she allowed just two runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
Game two featured another Spartans hit parade that lasted just five innings. Sofia Marella put STAC up 1-0 in the first inning on an RBI single, before Queens answered with a 2 RBI single of their own to claim their first lead of the day at 2-1.
The maroon and gold flipped the scoreboard with nine runs over the next three innings to take the mercy-ruled contest. In the second inning, a Knights' wild pitch brought home Olivia Leon to tie the score at 2-2, before a Maristella Coira RBI single and a Sofia Marella three-run blast made it 6-2 in favor of the visitors from Sparkill. Jordyn Gautier's 2 RBI single in the third pushed the Spartans lead to 8-2, with a two-run homer from Eliana Raposo extending the advantage to 10-2 in the fourth.
Pitcher Madison Puppolo (W, 13-5) continued her strong play while toeing the rubber by giving up just two runs on five hits, while fanning two Queens hitters to earn her thirteenth win of the year.
STAC closes regular season play on Sunday, April 27, hosting Molloy University at Spartan Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. with senior day festivities to precede the ECC doubleheader.
