Carissa Della Vecchia broke five statistical records and teammates Missy Sadler, Amanda Castro, Paige Toothaker and Amanda Schweitzer also entered the program’s all-time record book in the St. Thomas Aquinas College’s outstanding 2021 softball season.
The record setters helped carry the Spartans to a 24-13 record and their first-ever berth in the East Coast Conference championship round. The team was also ranked seventh in the NCAA’s East Region, the highest ranking ever for the program.
While the team reached several new heights of excellence, five Spartans were able to enter the program’s record book that carries the best single-season and career statistics in 10 categories since the program’s inception in 1980.
Della Vecchia’s first year at STAC was truly special. The junior was named first-team All-ECC as a pitcher and was also one of the team’s leading offensive players. On the mound, Della Vecchia set four new records:
- Single-season strikeouts (170) – No. 1 all-time
- Single-season wins (14) – No. 3 all-time
- Single-season earned run average (1.89) – No. 4 all-time
- Single-season complete games (18) – No. 4 all-time
In addition, Della Vecchia’s team-leading nine home runs is the third most in a season.
Sadler, who was also named first-team All-ECC, led the team in almost every offensive category. Her 10 stolen bases is the second highest single-season total ever and her 21 career steals ranks fifth on the all-time list.
Sadler and Schweitzer reached the prestigious 100-hit plateau during the season and now rank 12th and 24th, respectively, in career hits. Sadler finished with 125 hits and Schweitzer accumulated 107.
Junior Amanda Castro’s excellent offensive performance earned her second-team All-ECC honors and her .383 batting average is the fifth best all-time. Teammate Paige Toothaker joined Castro on the All-ECC second team and her impressive 2.01 earned run average is fifth best all-time.
Karen Thorne, a 2008 graduate, is the program’s all-time leader in hits, home runs and RBI. Allison Vickers, who graduated in 2004, is the career leader in complete games and earned run average and No. 2 all-time in wins and strikeouts.
