Excellent pitching efforts by Katie Humhej and Hannah Olshevski helped LIU Post register a pair of 3-1 wins over the St. Thomas Aquinas College Softball team in an East Coast Conference doubleheader Saturday at Spartan Field.
The win increased LIU Post's overall record to 33-7 and 14-2 in the ECC, while STAC dropped to 19-15 overall and 10-6 in the conference.
LIU Post built a 3-0 lead before the Spartans mounted an exciting rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ashley Landolina (Tolland, Ct.) led off with a triple and Kelcy McGeehan (Bayville, N.J.) drove her home with a single to right field. Teammate Melissa Sadler (Milton, N.Y.) singled to put the potential tying runs on base. However, Humhej was able to work out of the jam to earn her 17th win of the season.
Landolina and Sadler both had two hits and senior Colleen Borum (Mountain Top, Pa.) pitched well.
In the second game, Olshevski and STAC's Adrianna Dilal (Rochester, N.Y.) hooked up in a pitching duel. Dilal surrendered three solo homers, the only hits of the game for Pioneers, and struck out five batters. Olshevski scattered four hits and struck out three to up her record to 16-3. Alyssa Chelak (Poughquag, N.Y.) had two hits for STAC and Valerie Winalski (East Granby, Ct.) scored STAC's lone run.
"We faced very good pitching today," said STAC Head Coach Kristen Sullivan. "LIU Post is a quality team and I thought both games were very well played. We had our opportunities in both games, but didn't capitalize today."
St. Thomas Aquinas next visits Nyack College on Friday in a non-conference doubleheader that starts at 2 p.m.
