St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Volleyball players Gabriel Vieira, Thomas Santos, Kyran Versteegen and Joaquin La Jara were each selected for the East Coast Conference's weekly awards on Tuesday, following the Spartans sweep of matches against Roberts Wesleyan University (3-0 & 3-1) last weekend, including the program's first-ever conference victory.
Viera was tabbed as the ECC Player of the Week, while Santos took home Defensive Player of the Week, Versteegen Rookie of the Week and La Jara Setter of the Week.
Gabriel Vieira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) recorded a .396 hitting percentage over two matches last week, including a .467 average in a 3-1 victory over the Redhawks. The St. Thomas Aquinas freshman totaled 27 kills, three service aces, nine digs, a solo block, and three block assists across seven sets.
Thomas Santos (Miami, Fla.) totaled five assists and 13 digs over two matches last week. The Spartans’ freshman libero had three digs in a 3-0 non-conference win over Roberts Wesleyan before recording five assists and 10 digs in a 3-1 victory over the Redhawks the very next day.
Kyran Versteegan (Sittard, Netherlands) recorded a .242 hitting percentage over two matches last week, including a .441 average in a 3-1 victory over Roberts Wesleyan. The St. Thomas Aquinas freshman totaled 27 kills, six service aces, nine digs, and three block assists across seven sets.
Joaquin La Jara (Lima, Peru) totaled 70 assists (10.0 assists per set), one kill, a service ace, 20 digs, and a solo block over two matches last week. The Spartans’ freshman setter had 31 assists in a 3-0 non-conference win over Redhawks, before recording 39 assists in a 3-1 victory over Roberts Wesleyan the very next day.
St, Thomas Aquinas (3-9, 1-0 ECC) begins a five-match road trip, first stopping off at crosstown rivals Dominican University on Friday, February 23. The Spartans and Chargers get underway beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside of the Hennessy Center in Blauvelt, N.Y.
