STAC Men’s Tennis Stuns Hofstra with 4-3 Come-From-Behind Victory

Orangeburg, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Tennis team returned to action on Saturday evening, defeating Division I opponent Hofstra University in come-from-behind fashion, 4-3 at the Matchpoint Tennis Club in Rockland County.

STAC remains unbeaten at 5-0 on the year, while Hofstra falls to 0-6.

St. Thomas Aquinas began the evening by dropping two out of three doubles matches, with the team of Theo Renoux & Henry Ronnberg as the lone victors over Hofstra's Samarth Deepudass & Amir Albeg in the No. 1 slot by the score of 7-6 (7-3).

Up 1-0, the Pride would see the Spartans tie the score and take a 2-1 lead with No. 3 Henry Ronnberg besting Hideki Matsuoka 6-1, 6-2 and No. 5 Erik Victor Tauson downing Samarth Deepudass 6-2, 6-2. However, Hofstra would tie things back up at 2-2 on the strength of an Enaut Garcia-Beitia win against Ondrej Sramek at No. 4. Alex Di Fruscia then beat Lorenzo Meschini at No. 1 to put the maroon and gold on the ropes, but consecutive triumphs by Nathan Yacar over Amir Albeg at No. 6 and Theo Renoux's thrilling match-clinching win over Dominic Anderson at No. 2 sealed things in favor of St. Thomas Aquinas.

THE ROCKHILL REPORT

"We have learned a lot in these first two matches of the season," stated Head Coach Dan Rockhill. "Of course, we are pleased to have two wins but we need to get our doubles in order. We have had some trouble taking care of our service games, but that should come around if we continue to play the correct way."

"Hofstra is a gritty team and was tougher in the doubles and on a few of the singles courts but I think we won the collective mental battle tonight. I like their team and am thankful for the tough and spirited match. We will play some matches down the road where this experience will be of benefit.

"I am happy for Theo who continues to improve. He has embraced a tweaked approach and is seeing good results. He and Henry are also doing what works in doubles. Victor is building his confidence. He can be a special player here if he can control his peaks and valleys. I am also pleased with Nathan who was our MIP tonight. He has deserved an opportunity for a long time and showed that he can win when called upon."

"I am looking forward to shoveling out and getting to Florida in a few weeks."
