Sparkill, N.Y. - In yet another epic battle between East Coast Conference Men's Tennis powers, St. Thomas Aquinas College and Queens College squared off on Friday afternoon at the Riley Family Tennis Courts. As per usual the sides put on a show, with the final outcome determined by the last match of the day, as the Knights took a 4-3 decision over the Spartans to sweep the regular season series.
STAC slips to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in ECC play, while Queens improves to 8-4 and 3-1.
In doubles action, the Spartans took two of three matches to earn the first team point. No. 1 Seth Newman & Henry Ronnberg defeated Alexis Martin-Gibiard & Adam Laur, 6-1, but then No. 3 Lucas Foix Sotos & Loup Alleno doubled up Erik Victor Tauson & Ondrej Sramek, 6-3 to even the score at 1-1. Fortunately, No. 2 Nagamitsu Kuroda & Don Vinz Lominoque downed Ek Johansson & Tim Andersson, 7-5 to take overall victory.
Once singles got underway, STAC would take the first match to go up 2-0 via a 6-0, 6-2 victory by No. 4 Don Vinz Lominoque over Ek Johansson. Queens then got themselves on the board and took the lead with three straight triumphs. No. 2 Loup Alleno beat Lorenzo Meschini 6-3, 7-5, No. 3 Tim Andersson bested Erik Victor Tauson 6-3, 7-5 and No. 1 Lucas Foix Sotos defeated Seth Newman 6-4, 7-5 to put the Spartans on the ropes at 3-2. However, the exceptional play of Ondrej Sramek kept the match alive, as he was able to take down Alexis Martin-Gibiard 7-5, 6-4 to even things at 3-3. One final match remained on the docket, with No. 6 Adam Laur going one on one with Henry Ronnberg to decide the winner. As daylight began to wane, the two competitors battled in an instant classic that went three sets before Laur closed things out with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory to take the match for the visiting Knights.
