Spartans Record Third Straight Shutout Victory, 1-0 Over Staten Island

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Soccer team recorded its third straight shutout victory in conference play on Wednesday afternoon by slipping past the College of Staten Island 1-0 at Spartan Field.

STAC improves to 4-2-2 overall and 3-0 in ECC action with the win.

The Spartans received second half scoring from Jerry Tagliavia, with teammate Christian Ferlisi picking up the assist. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Ryan-Robert Ndje (W, 1-0) got his first start for the maroon and gold and had to make just two saves to earn his first victory and shutout.

For the visiting Dolphins, keeper Luca Schelling (L, 0-2-3) stopped 9 of 10 shots faced in a losing effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED

66th Minute: On an offensive rush by the Spartans, Christian Ferlisi received a redirected ball and danced around several Dolphins defenders to send a pass to the middle of the box for a breaking Jerry Tagliavia, who was all alone, for a shot past keeper Luca Schelling and to the back of the onion bag for a 1-0 lead.

  • St. Thomas Aquinas outshot Staten Island, 23-9 with the Spartans putting the ball on frame ten times and the Dolphins reaching the goal twice.
  • STAC earned a 5-4 advantage on corner kicks over CSI.
  • Jorge De La Vibora registered a match-high five shots, with one going on goal.
  • STAC had a chance to take a late first half lead on a penalty kick opportunity by De La Vibora, but his shot hit the right post for no goal.
  • The teams were whistled for 22 total fouls (14-8 CSI) and one yellow card (CSI).
