The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team extended its winning streak to five games with a pair of victories and moved up to the #6 ranking in the East Region from the United Soccer Coaches poll. The current winning streak is the program's longest since the Spartans reeled off six straight to start the 2010 season, with their current record improving to 8-2-1.
STAC entered the regional rankings for the first time this season one week ago, claiming the #8 slot. They claimed a rain-soaked 1-0 victory over Roberts Wesleyan on October 4 on Federico Scaglioni's goal with just under 15 minutes left in regulation. Three days later, the Spartans found themselves trailing New York Institute of Technology in the first half before Brad Neal tied the score with a second-half tally, and Lachlan Wilkinson netted the overtime winner in a 2-1 triumph.
Goalkeeper Jack Nicholson was rewarded for his efforts in the wins as East Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, and he retains the conference lead in goals against average at a minuscule 0.55.
With their 4-1 record in ECC competition, the Spartans are in a three-way tie with Mercy and LIU Post, returning to action for a conference rivalry showdown at Molloy College on Saturday, October 13.
